The group NewJeans has been named one of the most innovative and influential artists under 21 in the music industry.
On May 31st (local time), Billboard announced its '21 Under 21' list on its website. NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein) was the only K-pop artist included in this year's list.
The '21 Under 21' list is compiled annually by Billboard, considering various metrics such as album and song sales, streaming numbers, social media exposure, and radio/TV reach, as well as the overall impact on the industry. Billboard highlighted NewJeans' remarkable achievements in less than two years since their debut, noting that they have established a unique presence in K-pop.
Indeed, NewJeans reached the top of the 'Billboard 200' in the shortest time (one year) among K-pop groups with their second EP 'Get Up' last year. They also had five songs ('OMG', 'Ditto', 'Super Shy', 'ETA', 'Cool With You') on the Billboard Hot 100 and three songs ('OMG', 'Ditto', 'Super Shy') in the top 10 of the Global 200. Their popularity also earned them the 'Group of the Year' award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.
NewJeans continues to perform well on major charts at home and abroad with their recent double single 'How Sweet'. The title track 'How Sweet' entered Spotify's latest 'Weekly Top Songs Global' chart (May 24-30) at 85th place and ranked first in South Korea and Taiwan. On domestic music charts like Melon, 'How Sweet' and the B-side track 'Bubble Gum' are currently at 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.
