The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) has requested a police investigation into Song Minho of WINNER on allegations of violating the Military Service Act during his time as a social service worker.
This decision follows an internal review that uncovered issues requiring further investigation.
Depending on the outcome, Song Minho’s exemption status may be revoked.
An MMA official stated, "We have referred Song Minho to the police for investigation regarding a potential violation of the Military Service Act.
Although we completed our internal review, certain matters require verification through law enforcement." This step underscores the gravity of the allegations.
Song Minho is accused of failing to fulfill his duties after transferring to Mapo Resident Convenience Facility in March.
Allegations include irregularities in attendance records, such as signing multiple days’ records at once, and potential collusion with his supervisor, identified as "L."
YG Entertainment stated, "We are unable to verify the specifics of the artist’s service.
However, the medical leave was an extension of treatment received before service, and all leave was used in accordance with regulations."
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the performance of all social service workers under the city and its affiliated agencies.
Based on the findings, severe disciplinary measures will be taken, and if necessary, systemic improvements will be proposed to the MMA.
The MMA indicated that if the allegations of poor duty performance are confirmed, Song Minho’s exemption could be canceled, and he may be required to serve additional time for the problematic period.
This case has heightened public attention on the fairness of military service obligations.
This incident raises the need for a thorough review of the management and supervision of the social service worker system.
Ensuring fairness and transparency in fulfilling military duties, especially for public figures, is emerging as a key issue.
The outcome of the police investigation will determine Song Minho’s status and could lead to systemic improvements in the management of social service workers.
Seoul’s comprehensive review aims to prevent similar incidents and bolster trust in the system.
It is anticipated that this case will prompt institutional reforms to ensure fairness and transparency in military obligations, alongside stricter management of social service workers.
