Actor Song Jae-Rim(39) was found dead at his home in Seoul on the 14th, and allegations are surfacing that persistent harassment by a Japanese sasaeng (obsessive fan) may be connected to his death, shocking the entertainment industry.
According to police officials, a suicide note was found at Song Jae-Rim's residence that day.
A friend who had a lunch appointment with him became worried when he couldn't reach Song and visited his home, only to discover the tragic scene and immediately reported it to the police.
Notably, allegations are rapidly spreading on online communities and social media that a Japanese sasaeng fan, referred to as A, had been persistently harassing Song Jae-Rim.
Since April, A had been posting malicious slander against Song Jae-Rim through his "X" (formerly Twitter) account.
He reportedly continued to upload defamatory posts such as, "Did the gifts from fans become offerings to XX?" and "Can you hide your vile nature with your acting skills?"
More seriously, A is said to have infringed on Song Jae-Rim's privacy by unlawfully posting photos of his family and acquaintances.
Fans expressed anger, stating, "He persistently harassed him by even finding private accounts," and concerns arose that "Legal punishment might have been difficult since he's a foreigner."
Song Jae-Rim's agency stated, "We are in a state of deep sorrow at the current situation," and added, "We are reviewing legal action against malicious posts and the spreading of false information that defame the late Song's honor."
The late Song Jae-Rim began receiving significant attention with the 2013 drama 'Drama Name', and delivered impressive performances in numerous works such as 'Two Weeks', 'Inspiring Generation', 'Unkind Women', and 'Clean with Passion for Now'.
In the film industry, he solidified his position as a talented actor through movies like 'The Suspect', 'Crazy Love', and 'Yaksha: Ruthless Operations'.
Particularly, the fact that he had been actively working until recently, appearing in the TVING original series 'Queen Woo' and the play 'The Rose of Versailles', makes his sudden passing even more heartbreaking.
He was known to be highly respected among fellow actors and staff for his passion and diligence as an actor.
The police are conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of death and plan to closely examine any connection with the harassment by the Japanese sasaeng fan.
Entertainment industry associates and fans are mourning the deceased and are once again pointing out the seriousness of malicious comments and invasion of privacy against celebrities.
Meanwhile, actor Song Jae-Rim, born in 1985, had been actively working across dramas and films since 2013, showcasing a diverse range of works.
His final work, the play 'The Rose of Versailles', concluded successfully last month.
